AQUILIM 315 Water-Based Glue and Contact Cement
A safe and effective alternative to solvent-based adhesives for leatherworkers and hobbyists.
We now offer AQUILIM 315, a water-based glue, as well as a contact cement, representing a safer yet equally effective alternative to traditional, solvent-based adhesive types. These adhesives offer several benefits:
- Dries clear: Leaves no yellow or brown discoloration, providing a better aesthetic result, especially with bright colors.
- Water-based and odorless: Contains no solvents like toluene or MEK.
- VOC-free: A good choice for individuals with chemical allergies and sensitivities.
- Wide application range (AQUILIM 315): Suitable for all leather and skin types. Can also be used with good results on cork, foam, textiles, felt, styrofoam, wood, ABS, PUR, PE / foamed PE, PP, metal, rubber, and polyester.
- Contact cement (CR dispersion): Ideal for all common shoe and orthopaedic materials, except PVC and PE/PP. Allows for one-sided, immediate wet bonding on leather. Dries completely clear. Can be used with or without heat activation. Open time: 10-60 minutes. Also available in a spray version. This adhesive has similar properties to EcoStick 1816B.
- Safer storage and use: Since the adhesive is non-flammable, it is safer to handle in the workshop.
- Can be heat-reactivated: Like solvent-based adhesives, this adhesive can be reactivated with heat.
- Contact cement for permanent bonds: Ensures a strong and permanent connection.
- Rubber cement for removable bonds: Allows for temporary assemblies that can be separated again.
Safe Bonding Without Health Risks
Previously used adhesive types often contained toluene and methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK), which are effective but potentially harmful chemicals. Toluene's carcinogenic properties are recognized in certain regions, and the substance can be problematic for pregnant women. Although MEK is considered less harmful than toluene, repeated exposure can still cause nerve damage. Our new adhesives are developed without the use of toluene and MEK.
AQUILIM 315 and our contact cement are completely free of organic solvents, meaning:
- No VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
- No fume extraction required (except when spraying)
- No fire hazards
Excellent Adhesion Even on Oily Leather
Adhesion on oily leather types like Chromexcel and cordovan can be a challenge with many water-based and even solvent-based adhesives. With these new adhesives, it is possible to achieve a stronger bond on oily leather by mixing the adhesive with a matching hardener. The hardener requires extra handling but can be an effective solution for bonding this type of leather.
More Adhesive for Your Money
These water-based adhesives have a solids content of 60%. Many other adhesive types have a solids content of only around 15%, meaning that a large portion of the product evaporates. A higher solids content ensures that more of the adhesive is actually used to bond the surfaces together.
Dries Clear
An additional benefit is the use of quality resins, which ensure that the adhesive dries transparently or with a very light color, providing a cleaner result.
