A seam gauge is a small, handy measuring tool primarily used in sewing and tailoring. It typically has several different measuring units, often in both centimeters and inches, and is used for:

  • Measuring seam allowances: It helps to ensure consistent seam allowances, which is important for a professional result.
  • Marking hems: It can be used to mark even hems on sleeves, pant legs, or other places where precision is important.
  • Checking patterns: It can be used to check if the pattern pieces are drawn correctly and have the right measurements.
  • Measuring buttonholes: Some seam gauges have special markings to measure the correct distance between buttonholes.

Seam gauges are usually made of metal or plastic and are small enough to be kept in a sewing box or pocket. They are an indispensable tool for both professional and hobby sewers.
