Basane (Basil Leather)
(From the French basane, originally from the Arabic biṭāna for lining) is a trade term for vegetable-tanned sheepskin or lambskin delivered in a thin, supple, and untreated natural quality.
Within the tanning and leather trade, the term encompasses specific characteristics and traditional uses:
Characteristics
-
Tanning: The skins are vegetable-tanned (often bark-tanned) without heavy surface finishes or pigment coatings.
-
Thickness and Texture: Typically thin (commonly between 0.6 and 1.0 mm) with a soft, pliable hand and a fine, open grain pattern.
-
Absorbency: Because the hide features an entirely open, natural surface ("naturelle"), it absorbs leather dye, spirit stains, oils, and fats quickly and evenly.
-
Patina: Untreated basane darkens naturally with exposure to daylight, handling, and wear, developing a deep, golden-brown patina over time.
What is basane used for?
-
Bookbinding (Traditional Application): Historically one of the most widely used leathers for book covers and spines, as the material is thin, easy to pare (skive), and moulds precisely around binder's board.
-
Linings and Interior Finish: Frequently used as an internal lining in bags, wallets, footwear, cases, and presentation boxes.
-
Upholstery (Especially French Club Chairs): Classic French Art Deco club chairs are traditionally upholstered in vegetable-tanned sheep basane, then dyed and waxed by hand directly on the chair to create their signature patinated vintage look.
-
Embossing, Moulding, and Craft: Excellent for wet-moulding and shaping, as well as dyeing experiments and small leather goods requiring a supple, easily worked vegetable leather.
