Mailloche Iron

The mailloche iron is the indispensable leatherworking tool for obtaining superior quality, curved and shiny leathers, and high-end finishes.

If, by definition, specific irons are better suited for a particular finish, the mailloche iron is multi-tasking. All this thanks to its wide doming palette.

  • The mailloche iron is first and foremost a leather shaping iron. By heating the edge of the leather with the brass palette, it allows you to relax the leather and make it follow the curve of the iron. This shaping operation is common for doming the bottom of a bag.
  • The mailloche iron also uncreases the skins and flattens them by using the brass palette like an iron.
  • Finally, used in circular motions on the flesh side of sensitive leathers such as exotic skins, it restores curvature and shine to the scales.

The mailloche can be applied directly to leather and/or using a heat transfer paper called Teflon sheet.

These three operations give the leather its curvature and reveal all its shine to create large leather goods and luggage pieces.
